WEBSITE DESIGN IN YORK
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHOW ON PAGE ONE OF GOOGLE ? THEN READ ON
Imagine if your website could be found on page one when your clients searched for your service – the amount of money you could save on Google Ads could run into thousands of Pounds.
If we told you that not all website designers are the same and that a lot of your competitors websites are easy to outrank for your keywords. If your web designer knows what they’re doing that is.
Open up your google browser and type in your service (this is known as a keyword or keyword phrase as they’re often longer than 1 word) ie – Plastering services in York and check what websites are showing on page one for the organic listings. Any website with an Ad sign next to it is a paid result which you’d pay highly for as this is how Google makes its billions.
What you are seeing is first page results for the highest ranking sites that Google gives preference to as the sites are the most relevant to what you typed in, if you aren’t showing on this page then your website is worthless as the first page websites get 96% of all the traffic page 2 only get 4% as most people act on the first page results.
Now just think about that for a moment, you’ve already paid a website designer to create your website and your website doesn’t show up, even asking them to act on this is futile because if they could’ve done it then it would already be done as the process mainly takes place when your website is being built. Website design should always be optimised for Google to rank as high as possible right from the start otherwise Google won’t rank your site.
Here at Strawberry Website Design in York we build websites with full optimisation and we can also supply you with high quality backlinks from high quality referring sites to help with your ranking. Have a look around on our website for further information on how your website should be built or get in touch with us at Strawberry Website Design in York and we can arrange a 15 minute telephone audit with no pressure, all we need is your current website address and we can take a look for you free of charge and no obligation.

What Is SEO / Search Engine Optimization?
What is SEO?
SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” In simple terms, it means the process of improving your site to increase its visibility for relevant searches. The better visibility your pages have in search results, the more likely you are to garner attention and attract prospective and existing customers to your business.
How does SEO work?
Search engines such as GOOGLE and Bing use bots to crawl pages on the web, going from site to site, collecting information about those pages and putting them in an index. Next, algorithms analyze pages in the index, taking into account hundreds of ranking factors or signals, to determine the order pages should appear in the search results for a given query.
Search ranking factors can be considered proxies for aspects of the user experience. Our Periodic Table of SEO Factors organizes the factors into six main categories and weights each based on its overall importance to SEO. For example, content quality and keyword research are key factors of content optimization, and crawlability and mobile-friendliness are important site architecture factors.
The search algorithms are designed to surface relevant, authoritative pages and provide users with an efficient search experience. Optimizing your site and content with these factors in mind can help your pages rank higher in the search results.
Unlike paid search ads, you can’t pay search engines to get higher organic search rankings.
Why is SEO important for marketing?
SEO is a fundamental part of digital marketing because people conduct trillions of searches every year, often with commercial intent to find information about products and services. Search is often the primary source of digital traffic for brands and complements other marketing channels. Greater visibility and ranking higher in search results than your competition can have a material impact on your bottom line.
However, the search results have been evolving over the past few years to give users more direct answers and information that is more likely to keep users on the results page instead of driving them to other websites.
Also note, features like rich results and Knowledge Panels in the search results can increase visibility and provide users more information about your company directly in the results.

Top Mistakes Creating High-Quality Website Design
HIGH-QUALITY CONTENT
What to expect with high-quality web design If you want to make a great first impression with your target audience, then creating a high-quality website design is critical.
However, there are some very common mistakes that make it nearly impossible to create a high-quality site. Mistakes that are avoided One of the first and most important things to remember when developing your website design is to focus on the purpose of your website. When you do this, you will have a clear idea of what your site is going to accomplish and you can avoid mistakes.
The purpose will be determined by what it is you hope to accomplish through your website. For example, if you want to gain more targeted traffic to your website, then you may want to use a high-performance page that has a more detailed description of your business.
You may also want to use a more in-depth navigation system to help your visitors find their way through the pages. Another major mistake with many web designers is creating a "one size fits all" website design. While this is an effective way of creating your website, it is not going to provide you with the variety that is necessary for your customers to locate your business.
UNIQUE WEB DESIGN
A unique design will allow you to attract new customers while allowing your current customers to locate your website easily. Design considerations Many website owners don't realize that the design of their web design is important.
There are many different elements that go into creating a quality website design. When you take the time to think about the elements that you need to put into your website design, you will be able to make the most out of your design by creating a design that is going to be easy to navigate, search engine friendly, and provides your target audience with all the information they will need to purchase your products and services.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Another consideration is to avoid too many graphics and images on it. These can often distract the user from the content of your website and actually lead them away from your site, which will only result in a loss of sales. There are many contractor website design companies that can help you with this aspect of your site. Navigation One of the top mistakes when it comes to your web design is to create a website that is very hard to navigate. Your visitors will not enjoy your site if they can not find the information they need to make an informed decision. When they're unable to find information on your website, they are more likely to leave your website and do some research elsewhere. One of the biggest mistakes that web owners make when it comes to their web design is to create a website that is not informative.
WEBSITE CONTENT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE ONSITE
If you have a website that offers a great deal of information about your business, but the majority of the information is found off the website, this will not generate any sales and could turn off your potential customers. By taking the time to think about the elements of your design, you will be able to create a website that will allow your website to be highly effective and attract customers from all over the world. With the right type of website design, you can attract customers who want to purchase your products and services.

WEB DESIGN - How To Avoid 10 Common Web Design Mistakes That damage your rank on Google

If your website designer doesn't listen you may as well forget it
Picture this.
You’ve spent a ton of time designing your website. You’ve picked an attractive theme, added stunning images, and crafted compelling copy. You’re sure visitors will love it (and you). The only problem? You aren’t getting any visitors. In fact, your site is nowhere to be seen on Page 1 (or even #2 or #3) of Google. What’s going on? Well, here’s the thing. Your web design might be the reason your site is ranking so low in search engines.
Are You Ready to turn things around?
What follows are 10 of the most common web design mistakes that may be hurting your SEO efforts and your rankings – and how to avoid them. 1. Poor Website Navigation Ever visit a website and have no clue what to do next? You know, something like this. I bet it had you running for the hills in panic.
You don’t want your own visitors to do the same. Right? Instead, you want them to know exactly what to do at a glance. Plus, you want Google’s web crawlers to understand your site.
1.Make sure to prioritise internal linking between your important pages.
This is a major part of what Google is looking for so serve this up and you will be rewarded by Google and other search engines, always link to any posts that are relevant to the content as a backup source so your readers can see that you know what you are talking about.
2. Slow Page Load Speed
People in the online world moving at lightning speed. They’re constantly zipping through social media, hammering away at emails, and zooming past a ton of generic headlines on the SERPs.
This means if they take the time to click on your site, and it takes forever to load, they’ll be gone before you know it. After all, you didn’t invent the Keto diet or men’s wool socks. There are other websites with the same information you have. If you want your visitors to stay? Make sure your pages load in three seconds or less.
The scary part is the beautiful WordPress theme you carefully selected might be the reason your site takes an eternity to load.
To fix this? Ditch your sluggish theme for one of these tried-and-tested favourites:
Hello Elementor – This theme is simple and minimalistic, allowing for a clean interface and incredible speed.
Astra – Astra’s theme is one of the fastest loading themes on WordPress. It’s also super easy to use, with attractive pre-built demos for popular industries like pet care, outdoor activities, and more.
OceanWP – This theme allows you to have a beautiful design without compromising speed. It’s a fully responsive theme that looks great, even on smaller devices.
3. A non-mobile-friendly Site
Ever meet someone who told you he didn’t own a smartphone? If you have, I bet you had a ton of questions for this person.
Because the truth is, we expect everyone to own a mobile device. In fact, there 275 million smartphone users in the U.S. (For comparison, there are 331 million people living in the U.S.) Do these people use their smartphones to consume digital media? of course they do! In fact, 70% of all digital media consumed in the U.K. Is done from a smartphone! Worldwide, 52% of web traffic comes from a mobile device.
Inevitably Google took notice and came up with mobile-first indexing. This means it prioritizes the mobile version of a website for indexing and ranking. If your site isn’t optimized for mobile, expect it to essentially be invisible in the SERPs.
What’s more, visitors are 5x more likely to leave a non-mobile-friendly site. But don’t worry. It only takes a few tweaks to make your site mobile-friendly.
4. Missing H1 Tags (Especially on the Home Page)
Your H1 tag is the first thing search engine crawlers look for to help them determine what your site is about. If you don’t have one? Your site will more than likely fall in the SERPs.
H1 tags and why they're important
Including an H1 tag is more than just pleasing Google. It’s pleasing your visitors as well. For instance, take a look at STUDIOPRESS’s homepage. At a glance, you know exactly what the site is all about. Here are three tips on using H1 tags to please both Google and your visitors: Include your primary keyword in your H1. Put your H1 above the fold – the visible space people see before scrolling down. Apply the 5-second test. If visitors can tell exactly what your site is about in 5 seconds, your H1 tag is great.
5. Large Images & Media Files
Tempted to pack your website with beautiful images? Did you know that large images and media files can slow your site down? To make sure this isn’t happening, run your site through Google’s PageSpeed Insights Test. Scroll below to find out what Google suggests about the images you’ve used. If they’re too large, you can either resize them or compress and re-upload them to your site.
6. Disruptive Pop-Ups
Do you use pop-ups? Don’t worry. When used correctly, pop-ups can convert up to 1,375% more email subscribers The problem emerges when your pop-ups interrupt and annoy your visitors. According to Google, sites with annoying pop-ups will have trouble ranking high on the SERPs. The solution? Build popups your audience will love.
OK. They may never love them, so you should at least build high-converting pop-ups that won’t annoy them. For instance, you can time a pop-up to appear once a visitor has spent at least 30 seconds on your site. Or once a user has scrolled halfway down your page.
7. Text in Images
This problem isn’t hard to avoid, so it’s a surprise that so many web designers do it. The problem is when you add text directly into an image, you’re missing out on the chance of using an H1, sub-headline, and relevant keywords above the fold.
Remember, although your visitors can read the text in images, Google can’t.
8. Infinite Scroll
Ever had to scroll to the bottom of a webpage and see new content loading? That’s infinite scroll. And while it’s OK, it poses one problem. Google bots can’t scroll. This means they won’t be able to index the additional pages on your site. For example, your site has 100 pages. However, your default setting only shows your 10 most recent posts. When Google crawls your site, they won’t know there’s any content beyond these top 10 posts.
9. Thin Content In the online world, your website is your storefront.
This means you should decorate it so visitors are attracted to it and know exactly what you offer. Also, you want to optimize it for keywords so people can find you. To make sure you hit both birds with one stone? Avoid thin content. Here are three signs of thin content. Not Having Service/Product Pages Eliminating these pages means letting go of the chance to rank for relevant keywords. Listing Multiple Products or Services on One Page It’s a great idea to have one keyword per page. Advertisement Continue Reading Below This means one product or service per page. Make it easy for Google to understand what every one of your webpages is about. You should be rewarded with greater visibility in the SERPs. Thin Content on Your Product Pages Doesn’t scratch the surface when working on your product pages. Fill them with a quality, keyword-targeted copy. Also, make sure what you write is compelling enough to turn visitors into customers. Advertisement Continue Reading Below Resist the urge to write a lazy copy. Like this.
10. Not Having a 404 Page
Having a 404 page is a necessity. It’s not that random page you create on a Saturday when you have nothing to do. It’s an important page telling visitors you care about their experience. You want to keep them on your page and show them where to go next. With a little creativity, you can use your 404 pages to make visitors smile instead of feeling annoyed. Advertisement Continue Reading Below Ready to create your own 404 pages? Check out this post for inspiration: The Best 404 Pages: 37 Examples You Need to See. Summary You’ve already spent a ton of time designing your website. You know visitors will find it beautiful, attractive, and well-polished. The next step? Make sure people actually find it on Google. If you aren’t getting the results you expected from your SEO efforts, check your website for these critical web design mistakes. Fixing these issues should help you rise in the SERPs.
10 Elements Of Modern Website Design That Drive Engagement (+ Examples)

All our website designs in york are fully compatible with all screen sizes
Modern website design is a relative phrase. Some people might think a website designed in 2010 is modern, while others in the web design field have seen so many new things in the past year, that anything pre-2019 is already outdated. The thing we notice most is that modern website design doesn’t require or benefit from a ton of bells and whistles. The more simple and clean, the better the user experience is. How Website Design Affects User Experience via GIPHY How your visitors perceive and interact with your website really can make or break you. User experience (UX) is the overall experience a person has using a product (like your website), especially in terms of how easy or pleasing it is to use. Your website design can affect UX in a few ways: It Guides the Reader’s Eye Down the Page. A well-designed website will know how to keep the reader scrolling. Oftentimes, this means breaking up content into smaller chunks, including visual hierarchy with banner images, fonts, and supporting elements, and utilizing white space. It Captures Their Attention. What happens above the fold really does affect the entire user experience. It only takes 0.05 seconds for a visitor to decide whether or not they’ll stick around on your website. Therefore, that first impression counts and you have to grab their attention! It’s important to include high-quality imagery, good typography, and to be cohesive in your design. Clutter will only detract a visitor and force them to click out of your site. It Increases Functionality. via GIPHY How your website functions is also a huge factor in overall user experience. Responsive web design makes sure that your website looks and functions the same no matter what device a website visitor is on. It Promotes Professionalism and Can Build Trust. Outdated and tacky websites won’t cut it anymore. And, since 94 percent of people won’t trust an outdated website, consistently updating and refining your design and content is key to pleasing consumers. A great website design will present your business as professional, clean, and often can help you seem more reliable. It proves that you know what you are doing and you can present your business in a clear, professional manner. 10 Elements of Good Modern Website Design Here are some of the elements of great website design with examples to help inspire you to create your own beautiful modern website design. 1. A Strong, but Limited, Color Palette This might sound rudimentary, but color schemes and color usage are very important when it comes to modern web design. A strong color palette will help create cohesiveness between everything your business puts out. Companies who have both primary and secondary colors have more wiggle room to work with when creating new elements for their website, whether it’s the homepage, landing pages, blogs, or a resource database. However, the number of colors you incorporate in your design is also a very important aspect. Too many colors become visually distracting, so most modern website designs opt for only two or at the most three in their major design elements. Check out huge sites like Apple and Amazon. You won’t find a rainbow of colors – just one background color (white or black) and one major accent color (silver, yellow, and blue, respectively). Simplifying the color scheme of your site makes it easier to focus, and this is why there are only minimal color combinations in modern website designs. For example, check out Snipcart’s website with a simple and attractive dark gray, white, and yellow color scheme. Bonus tip: If you struggle with everything starting to look repetitive on more content-rich pages, you can experiment with different shades and tints of your current colors. This will add a little variety to your designs while keeping consistent with your brand. 2. Plenty of White Space This goes along with the last modern website design element, but white space is also very attractive. It doesn’t necessarily even have to be white. White space is a term used for the amount of “empty” space that acts as a buffer between all the elements on your page, including copy, sidebar, margins, etc. Things should have room to breathe; if your website is crowded, it is very hard to direct the attention of your visitor’s eye. Pocket Penguins uses whitespace that is aesthetically pleasing and provides organization. Further down on the homepage, they introduce the books they sell using quotes from some of their classic books. Purposely designing your website with white space makes for a clean design that is easily digestible and organized. As websites are adapting a more minimalistic style, keeping space open on your page will allow your reader to navigate their way around page with more ease. 3. Responsive Hero Images As we mentioned before, a good website should be able to attract your attention and guide your eyes down the page. One way to do this is to incorporate high-quality, vivid hero images. Take HelloFresh’s homepage for example. The minute you enter their site, you are captivated with a pop of color and several images of delicious fresh food. This hero image makes users want to start cooking fresh meals just like the ones in the picture. This colorful hero image immediately captures your attention. If you incorporate hero images throughout your website, you can ensure that visitors will keep looking around. 4. Valuable Calls to Action As we hinted earlier, converting visitors into leads and customers is also very important to modern website design. Here’s why: Websites are meant to connect you with the people who are interested in your content, products, and services. Once this connection is made, you want to retain some sort of relationship with these visitors. Conversion paths start with enticing gated content, like email newsletter subscriptions, free downloadable ebooks or whitepapers, free product forms, free consultations, or other exclusive invites. These paths are successful when they include great calls to action (CTAs). These should be strategically incorporated into your website design and are very important for gathering the contact information (at least an email address) of your visitors so that you can continue conversations with them as leads and convert them into customers. For instance, Epic, the digital reading library for kids, has three unassuming but attractive CTAs on the homepage that are well placed. The CTAs are also catered to Epic’s specific target audience, parents and educators. Include relevant CTAs in optimal places throughout your website – at the end of blog posts, in the sidebars, and in your resources page, to name a few. And don’t forget to place a CTA on your homepage! 5. Cohesive Card Designs With the more minimalistic website design style starting to take over, the use of cards has grown in popularity. Cards help visitors consume your content a little easier by grouping together text and imagery to form one eye-catching element. Help Scout effectively added cards throughout their website to create a simplistic grid design that is organized and user friendly. Bold graphic images are accompanied by simple titles to help inform readers what they can expect to read when clicking on one of their guides. Utilizing cards in your website design can help you attain a clean, organized look while keeping user experience at top of mind by appropriately sectioning off your content into bit-sized pieces. 6. High-Quality Product Videos As video marketing continues to grow more and more popular among both B2C and B2B businesses, many companies have started adding product videos and other company feature videos to their website. Doing this can help highlight your brand’s personality and show off what your business has to offer your customers. According to research, 92 percent of B2B customers watch online videos, and 43 percent watch online videos when researching services and products for their business. Videos really can impact the decision-making process. These short videos allow for your prospect to quickly understand value without watching a really long, in-depth experience. Sure, both have value, but the shorter videos allow for quick understanding that is best for top of the funnel. Fort, the design studio website, has an intuitive video that starts going through various slides with attractive product pictures on it. You can slide your cursor over the “play reel” CTA to stop or play the video. Place videos strategically around your website – maybe on your pricing page to talk about your pricing options, maybe on your product page to demonstrate your products, or on your about us page to introduce your team to everyone. Wherever you use video, it can be a great tactic to add a little flair and movement to your website. 7. Clean Backend Coding This modern website design element is one that you might not notice visually, but it is probably the most important when it comes to the functionality of your site. Behind every website is a great deal of coding in the backend that will dictate how your website performs. At our Tampa, Florida office, Bluleadz has skilled designers who also know how to code a site to function flawlessly, load quickly, and navigate effectively for converting visitors into leads and customers. via GIPHY Dedicating the extra time for clean backend coding will make it easier to write, read, and maintain how your site functions. Have you ever been digging for something out of your closet, but it’s just too damn messy to find? Like a cluttered closet, if you don’t have clean backend coding, it will only be harder to locate and fix any issues that may come up. 8. User-Friendly Design This element of modern website design is exactly what it sounds like: You should design your site for the user, not just to boost your rankings. Companies, out of a sense of desperation to get better rankings, tend to do things that are “good” for Google but bad for the user. However, this shouldn’t be the hierarchy of importance for website design. A website should be user friendly before a company should concern itself with ranking higher on a search engine results page. For instance, Quiver is an incredibly well-designed site that is effortlessly user-friendly and easy to navigate. Google is smart: It can tell when your users are getting good value from your website because they keep coming back and spending more time on it. Place your content above SEO, at least when first starting off, to optimize your site for the user and build a group of loyal, recurring visitors. 9. SEO-Boosting Elements While I just mentioned that a website should be designed for the user first, it doesn’t mean that SEO doesn’t matter. There are modern website design elements that can greatly improve the search engine optimization (SEO) of your site. A lot of these are invisible to the naked eye and also appear in the backend coding of your pages and posts. Design tricks like meta tags, title tags, heading tags, and other HTML coding go a long way in helping your site climb the ranks of Google’s search engine. Make sure you fill out, tweak, and optimize these elements so they are relevant to your site and improve your search ranking. 10. Speed Optimization Optimizing for speed is an imperative design element that should not be overlooked. With today’s technology, people expect things to load immediately, or they’ll probably throw in the towel three seconds later and never return. As a business, you don’t want leads and prospects to think negatively about your brand just because your website is slow. To make sure your website is fully optimized for speed, here are a few tips: Always optimize a photo, no matter how small it is. Enable compression so files will be smaller and open quicker. Minimize HTTP requests in Google Chrome’s Developer Tools. Choose the proper hosting options, whether it’s shared hosting, VPS hosting, or a dedicated server. Incorporate these 10 elements into your modern website design. Prioritize user experience, and make sure that you optimize your website for not only its physical design but its functionality too. You also need to consider your mobile site speed. Most people today look at websites on mobile devices, and slow mobile site speed will cause a higher bounce rate and more exits. 10 Examples of Companies With Good Modern Website Design Here are 10 companies with the best modern website designs that include many of the awesome elements mentioned above. 1. Brit + Co We’ve talked about Brit + Co in the past – and for good reason. Brit + Co is a “media company that inspires, educates and entertains real women with a creative spirit.” And it seems their website does just that for us! Their website is full of bold yet muted colors and clean lines. They section off their pages well, which helps bring your eye down the page, and they let their strong imagery speak for itself. A lot of white space comes flooding in from the sides, so nothing looks cluttered and everything is easy to read. 2. Bose Bose is a well-known audio equipment company, and their website screams sophistication and functionality. The large hero images are eye catching yet highlight their products perfectly. Bold typography with a lot of visual hierarchy keeps you attentive to the page. The featured products section right under the fold is a great way to bring in some white space after the dark black hero image. 3. Oak Street Bootmakers Simple and refined are the two words that immediately come to mind when looking at the Oak Street Bookmakers website. The more natural-tone colors are very calming to the eye, and the images of their products are very clean and direct. To keep with the calming look, they opted to place white text over their images rather than making a bolder statement with black. Since their homepage is pretty short and simple with only three main sections, they chose to get a little more creative with their header and navigation, using a more sectional design rather than just placing a straight navigation on top of the page. 4. Londonist Textile Agency Speaking of feature videos in modern website design, the Londonist Textile Agency nails it. The second you land on their homepage, you’re drawn into the panning video of an individual looking at a bunch of design sketches. The video is simple yet has a lot of textural and visual elements that keep your eyes looking around. The rest of their homepage combines white space with angular dusty blue elements and image overlaps. The complete design is bold yet professional and simple. They utilize super bold headers to point out major elements of their business, and keep the rest pretty standard and refined to contrast nicely. 5. website design and seo - 4 tips to get ahead
Four SEO Tactics That Could Give You A Competitive Edge
There are always new ways to use content and optimise pages to increase the quantity, quality and traffic to your websites via organic search. While the SEO basics can get you up and running, more advanced tactics are often the difference in more competitive sectors. Here are four ways that you could gain an edge in your industry heading into 2021.
Turn something old into new
Green-lighting new content campaigns will help you to engage with more customers amid a spike in demand for digital content, but you may already be sitting on a treasure trove of articles and blogs that can be refitted to your purposes for the next few months.
Returning to older content also gives you the chance to effectively right some wrongs and make small changes that could unlock its full potential in search. Remember, it is rare for a new piece to soar to the top of SERPs immediately.
However, you need to be selective in your process here as some content may not be worth your time. You should base your research process on current trends and data you can analyse in Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
Any blogs or articles that did deliver rankings and traffic initially but have since fallen away may be ripe for a refit. To confirm this, head over to Google Search Console and navigate to the Pages section within Performance and Search Results. You should now be able to see the search queries for your pages.
From here, click on the impressions header to sort the queries by impressions and take note of the ‘position’, which is the search ranking, for each one. Any queries that are making an impression but are not taking top spots in Google are classed as ‘striking distance keywords’.
You can now increase the visibility of published content again by updating the copy based on these keywords and queries, as well as new trends and facts. A drop-off in key metrics is likely related to it being less relevant, so bringing it up to speed could give content a new lease of life.
Take action on underperforming content
While older content often still has value, especially when it can be recycled, there are probably pages on your site that do not really serve a purpose. If this is the case, it may be best to remove them entirely as low-quality or thin content does not align well with Google’s search algorithm.
The process of removing content, also known as SEO pruning, is simple enough. All you have to do is run a content audit. This audit should highlight the URLs that are simply not pulling their weight. Cutting these lacklustre pages will make your site stronger and more relevant as a whole.
There are software tools that will help you conduct an audit relatively quickly. Basically, you need to crawl your site and assess its performance based on key metrics. You can build out a spreadsheet from this information to make the pruning process easier.
Now that you know how each URL is performing, you can start taking affirmative action based on a ‘keep, improve and merge’ template.
Keep pages that are performing well
Edit pages that need improvements
Merge or consolidate pages that have failed to deliver any meaningful traffic
While you can roll out these changes immediately, SEO experts recommend covering the process in stages so that you can better gauge the impact. Getting rid of under performers is a good place to start, and if this has a positive impact, you can move on to the rest. Pruning should be conducted once every six months to a year, but be wary of doing it too regularly.
Consider topic clusters
If you have been working with an agency and want to pursue new projects based around a certain topic or keyword, you will find great value in the concept of topic clusters and pillar pages, both of which can support SEO.
Topic clusters are defined as pages or content that are built around a core topic. While they don’t all cover the same information, these pages are all linked to and feed into a greater whole. For example, if you were covering SEO, you could create content that goes into detail about technical SEO, local SEO and backlinks, as well as Google’s algorithm updates and SEO best practices.
Internal linking is central to this concept as, ideally, you want to create connections between content that is related. Covering topics in detail and linking to them will make it easier for you to showcase your authority and expertise. It also increases the relevance of each piece – this will make it more valuable for readers, which then leads to better performance in search.
Using topic clusters in content creation is a great way to build content with a specific purpose. However, updating your site to fit a topic cluster structure is a greater undertaking as you need to think about secondary clusters. That said, it can really be worthwhile in the long run.
Fix issues with 404s
Google’s Gary Illyes has confirmed in the past that it ignores links leading to 404 pages entirely. While these links may have been active at publication, the presence of 404 pages undermines a targeted linking strategy. Fortunately, you can address this issue and clean up any errors by using a Backlink Analytics tool.
By running your domain through the tool, you will be able to see pages that other domains have linked to that are no longer delivering any authority. All you need to do is put a 301 redirect in place or relaunch the page to fix your 404 woes.
This is also a great opportunity to capitalise on the 404 issues that competitors might have. Running a rival’s domain through the tool will also surface any pages that are pointing to a 404. If your content covers a similar topic or subject, you could reach out to the site owners and request that they use your URL as a replacement.
If you have already got the basics covered, implementing one or two advanced tactics, or even more if time permits, can increase your organic visibility and drive more traffic to your pages.
